Background

In little more than ten years, Drama Studies has established itself as one of the liveliest subject areas at Queen’s University and one of the largest university drama departments in Ireland. With more than two hundred students at undergraduate and postgraduate level, we run a wide variety of educational programmes in all aspects of theatre and performance, and enjoy exceptionally strong connections with the local professional theatre community.

There is a strong emphasis on research-led teaching in the many areas of lecturer expertise including Irish Theatre and performance practice. The department enjoys close links with the International Federation of Theatre Research, the Irish Society of Theatre Research and the Theatre and Performance Research Association (TaPRA). Whether you are interested in our work as a prospective student or a research colleague, we hope that you will find the information you need on these web-pages and we invite you to contact us at drama.studies@qub.ac.uk if you need any further details about our work.

Opened in February 2009 by Brian Friel, The Brian Friel Theatre and the Brian Friel Centre for Theatre Research form the centre piece of the Drama and Film Centre at Queen's University which opened in October 2004.

Both the theatre and research centre aim to produce work of the highest international standard and lead the way in theatre research and theatre production.

The theatre and research centre have already hosted international conferences as well as touring productions from around the world with a view to establishing one of the leading academic drama facilities.

The Brian Friel Theatre is located in the heart of the university campus and is the focal point for the creative and performing arts within the university.
