Rhinoceros

When a rhinoceros charges across a town square and tramples down an innocent pussy one quiet Sunday afternoon, Berenger is unconcerned. However rhinoceroses start popping up everywhere, putting Berenger’s world as he knows it under threat.  What will it take for Berenger to stand up to the increasing threat of rhinoceritis?

Rhinoceros represents Ionesco’s most forceful expression of the horrors of convention, as Berenger watches his friends turn into rhinoceroses one by one, until he alone stands unchanged against the relentless tide of conformity.  It has been 50 years since Ionesco’s Rhinoceros was first performed, and in this new translation by Martin Crimp audiences should be prepared to be faced with the oncoming threat of rhinoceritis and ‘imagine that one fine morning you discover that rhinoceroses have taken power. They have a rhinoceros ethics, a rhinoceros philosophy, a rhinoceros universe’ … will you conform?
